Everything is better from a train

(Even if the train is extremely slow)

@dwlt the Caltrain is so much better now that they’re electric. They used to run much slower and less frequently.

The Amtrak trains are very scenic

California Zephyr is amazing (going to Reno for the weekend is a fun short ish ride)

I also like the coast starlight to Portland

@skinnylatte I need to explore CA trains a bit more next time I’m over. Used Caltrain between SJ and SF last week, but need to check out any more scenic options available.

I have used the Cascades line from Portland to Seattle which was beautiful.

@skinnylatte yep, definitely a big difference from the first time I used it 20 odd years ago!

Going to explore the Amtrak site before my next visit in April 🙂

@skinnylatte Just took the Zephyr to Chicago, highly recommend. Better during the winter.
Coast Starlight is incredible during the summer, waking up in an Oregon sunrise.

@bigelow yeah’ I just did the coast starlight to Portland in August. Was great.

I took the zephyr often to Nevada but haven’t gone the whole way

The trains my parents take most are the high speed trains in Taiwan so they’re experiencing a culture shock at the (lack of) speed in this train

@skinnylatte Yeah, the lack of good rail infrastructure in the US is so depressing. Even here in the Northeast, the "high speed" Acela... usually isn't. -sigh-

@Dhmspector yeah, and all the cities with functioning transit that now don’t have any.

I was reading a book about Chinese immigrants to the Sacramento delta in the 1800s and they were talking about taking the boat to SF and I’m like that seems easier than now haha

@skinnylatte we used to have a completed rail network in the US. You could literally take local trains across the country if you wanted.

The creation of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s killed it by prioritizing cars and trucks over passenger and freight trains.

It was a deliberate choice whose cost to the nation was/is incalculable.

@skinnylatte The views from SF to Denver on the zephyr are all fantastic and cover a wide gamut. Beautifully desolate deserts in Nevada and Utah, winding canyons and grand mountains in Colorado. Spectacle for landscape watchers.

This is the slow scenic way to get to my workplace that I only do if I leave on a Sunday.

Oakland to Salinas then transfer to Amtrak bus to Monterey. If I catch a ride with a coworker it’s 2h in a car. Otherwise I just take the Airbus from SF airport (2.5-3h)

@skinnylatte my reminder kicked in for food recommendations :-) Arriving next Saturday (all being well) - staying downtown San Jose for a working week. I won’t have a car but happy to travel. I normally head up to Campbell farmers market on the Sunday morning

@dwlt out there, I think the immigrant food is the best

I really enjoy Ramen Nagi in the Santa Clara mall

The green one is very good if they still have it!

Jubba Somali restaurant. Excellent Korean food (I like Danbi and Baekjong. Danbi has some of the best bulgogi I’ve had anywhere)

Good Cambodian at Angkor Chef, Portuguese egg tarts at Pastaria Adega

Best pho in the Bay Area is in San Jose. Pho Kim Long or Pho Dao or Pho Y #1

Also interesting Uyghur food! Kusan and a bunch of others
