    Look, if we're talking about changing our tariff structure in Canada, could we drop this ridiculous surtax on Chinese-made electric cars? We need to be decarbonizing our economy *now*.

      @Christopher the justifications are entirely protectionist, unrelated to labour or safety standards. All imported cars have to pass Canadian safety requirements.

      Doubt it, for pollical and security reasons.

      Plus, this is China. Knowing them, their either using low paid slave labor, cutting corners on safety, or using materials that wouldn't be considered "environmentally friendly" to get prices this low.

      @evan I completely agree. And if in the next few years the US gov succeeds in destroying the Canadian auto manufacturing sector, then Canada should definitely drop the tariffs on Chinese EVs and realize the benefits of better and cheaper cars. The newest EVs from Zeekr and BYD, with world-beating battery tech, look amazing

      @silicatefondue

      You're wrong on the first point and right on the second. The Dodge Charger Daytona is manufactured in Windsor.

      There are a few EV startups, too.

      But I agree; they should get rid of the protectionist tariffs.

      @evan There are no Canadian-made electric cars -and unlikely to be. The cars manufactured in Ontario serve a different market all together -hence Chinese EVs and Canadian manufacturing are not in conflict. Reducing the tariff to, say, 25% on small, well-made EVs (that pass Canadian safety standards) would give Canadian consumers options they don't currently have.
