@jens During college, the ratio is about 5 female singers to 1 male, the ratio gets worse over time, and the majority of male singers are baritones. Big voices (dramatic and spinto) mature decades after college, so by the time a tenor can sing the high profile lead roles, they get insane amounts of money, and on top of that get away with behaviour that would get any soprano fired on the spot.

@jens There was an article I was interviewed for several years ago about gender discrimination in opera, that touches on the subject of male to female ratio in the business:

@jens Ih, no worries, I accidentally posted before I was done writing, because I felt I should check the privacy setting, and while I was editing you had already replied!

It’s a pun, but also based on oh so many real life examples. Somehow it’s always the tenors messing things up. They are super rare and sought after, and because of that can get away with almost anything, and they know it.

@meganmariehart Hey, my intro post warns folk that I *like* puns and dad jokes. I'm not ashamed of that, so I'm also not trying to shame you! The congratulations was earnest, as was my wincing.

@meganmariehart Did you manage to turn this into a bad pun? Dad level 9000 unlocked, congratulations!

(Apropos of... well, this... are bad puns *really* just a dad thing? I know plenty of mums who excel at them... maybe we need a new name.)
