@WilhelmIII @Billy_Hughes @mitchconner Milk is not shelf stable. Ultra pasteurized is, but that's pretty explicitly labeled. -

Our milk is always in the refrigerated section. Not refrigerating eggs and milk is nonsense -

Most milk in the US in now shelf-stable and doesn't need to be refrigerated.
It's still kept in coolers in the store to make you think they haven't added a shit ton of chemicals to it, but they have.

@WilhelmIII @Billy_Hughes @mitchconner I've had two incidents of milk gallons getting left in a car. Trust me, it's not "shelf stable". That turns into a stink bomb. -

@WilhelmIII @Billy_Hughes @mitchconner The FDA says 4 hours out of refrigerator for a gallon of milk, still sealed. You can realistically get double that if you're using it right away. As soon as the temp goes up, bacteria start to multiply like crazy. I am a raw milk enjoyer, especially goat milk, but let's not kid ourselves. In conversation permalink -

Yeah, you can't leave it in the car. Like you can't leave a Hershey bar in the car.

@WilhelmIII @Billy_Hughes @mitchconner Neat. Still not the average milk you buy though. I have had some shelf stable milk before and it tasted weird. Possibly because it wasn't cold. In conversation permalink -

Most commercial dairy bottlers are consolidating their production lines to reduce costs and making everything ultra-pasteurized.
The tell is that shelf-stable milk gets a bit yellow, so they add titanium dioxide to it to make it White.
Read your label.

Ultra-pasteurization changes the nutritional quality of the milk (and the taste, as you noted) but during the process the milk becomes "sticky" so it's "rinsed" with a chemical called D90 which is a aliphatic mineral spirit solvent.
