In her retirement, my mum has been learning to play the cello, having played it when she was at school.
She went to the Oxfam music shop at the weekend to get a book of studies, to practice with.
She found one, opened it up, and... saw her name written inside the cover, in her own handwriting from 60-odd years ago.

@david @darkling I was a first chair second violinist as a freshman in HS. After ditching it for the guitar, the same sentiment goes for popular music. Except for the "extremely good" part. It's who you know, not what you know. Connections matter, as does a willingness for you, or your parents, to owe people for your manufactured success.
It would be nice if it was a good career avenue to walk down. Music just isn't, for most of us. But I still write and post music during moments when I'm not soured on the whole thing, lol.
The last time I picked up my violin, it was to record a duet with one of the Canote Brothers (Jerry), way back when. I'm restringing instruments. I might give it another screech or two. 🎻
You cellists (and Mom) should post recordings here. I'll boost!

@darkling @steter oh wow. That’s great. I also plan to pick it up again once I'm retired. Played for about 12 years thru early uni. But unless you are extremely good and even more extremely lucky, it's not a career, so I had to focus on other things.

@david @darkling LOL! I lost the ability to care what anyone else thinks long ago, so I'll post anything I ever recorded and regret it later.
Also, we must face reality, or whatever this is. The year is 2025. Even if it sounds like "strangling cats again," there are people who dig that vibe.

@steter @darkling the “extremely good” part is somewhat relevant for professional employ as a classical musician eg in a symphony. Competition is insane. I was decent but never near pro level. Yr basic wedding quartet grinding out The Four Seasons for the thousandth time, yeah I could get that work. Which pays nothing. And I hate that piece anyway.
But yeah I’m sure orchestras are no strangers to nepo babies and who-ya-knows.
My string manglings aren’t for public consumption 🤣 “Aaaa that guy in 308 is strangling cats again!”
