@ansuz @jonny okay, so basically, GotoSocial recently added logic to their nodeinfo endpoint to return random user/status counts.

If they wanted to preserve privacy, they could set the value to 0, we work on an honor system, and are used to pleroma instances faking this, but from the project itself, it just de-legitimized it from the standpoint of the honor system and playing nicely with others.

    This seems really intentional.

@shlee @ansuz @jonny it gives "inflate numbers, fuck the rest of the fedi" vibes, just to try to get attention.

i don't get it. maybe make something people will use, and then you won't have to fake numbers under the guise of "privacy"

      But maybe that's just me

@dansup @ansuz @jonny that feature is stupid, but they really should pick a random number lower than their actual number to not inflate it at best.

Nobody understands threat modals... this is what's called "security theatre"... doesn't fucking do anything but makes people feel like they're helping with privacy or some shit.

@jonny @shlee @ansuz "nobody reads these stats" umm, like the media or like literally any member of the fediverse?

Just goes to show the wanton disregard for the rest of the fediverse and how they feel so liberated to suddenly disrupt the honor system that makes Nodeinfo so useful.

Keep playing that card tho, if I cared about clout, I wouldn't be talking to you right now.

@dansup @shlee @ansuz so this is the part where i think most ppl on the fedi are gonna read these posts/this thread different than you - i would say almost nobody actually looks at those numbers, and it's understandable why you do. for this to be some play for clout would mean that people at large in general care about and pay attention to the number of people running different software, which is just not what they are going for - different audiences.
