     I quite agree, however, I did a bit of research on English-language texts of the period. "streamlining" is the term that seems to have been used by scolars. I'm happy to be corrected by scientists/historians, though. I've never been happy with the English translation.

     @HistoPol @w7voa Gleichschaltung is definitely the right word here, but “streamlining” is too harmless of a translation. “Bringing to heel” is more appropriate.

     @HistoPol @w7voa Well, I’m a scientist, but not that kind of scientist. I am, however, a German, whose family did suffer under the Nazis (albeit not as much as many others), which is why I offered this translation. Let the historians of Mastodon chime in.

     Thanks, however this is way to weak for what really happened in 1933 onwards.

     What ist missing (now? b/c I think it used to be there) and what ist progressig at a fast pace in the #US is #GleichschaltungDerPresse (I guess no translation is necessary, in particular, if Elmo also gets his claws into #TikTok)

     I’ve usually seen this as “coordination” - Gleichschaltung means something like “getting in the same gear”. In some cases, of course, this was done voluntarily by institutions. In other cases, this supposedly innocuous demand to “get on the same page” worked only through the threat of state power.

     @HistoPol @christinkallama @w7voa The link you sent was interesting (history was my 3rd Abitur subject after (obviously) math and physics) in that it mentions the Night of the Long Knives. I think we’ll see something similar here. Trump clearly chose the oligarchs, which leaves Bannon and the MAGA true believers on the more anti-capitalist side. Once they’ll find out they’ve been shafted, it’ll be interesting to see how this will play out.

     Agreed.--However, #Bannon being one of the most dangerous players in this game, apart from #PeterThiel (brains and military high-tech) and #ElonMusk (financials,) I will not be sad at all when it happens. Being a #PsyOps mastermind, he simply *must* be seeing that he has it coming.

     Right - the term came from the regime, so it made it seem like an administrative adjustment, rather than, well, the fascist move it was. So the explanation is different from the translation. I would say that the Abitur summary understates the willing participation of many components of German society, because it concentrates on the legal mechanisms, such as censorship, rather than voluntary compliance. But the fact that the NS regime enacted the Gleichschaltung through legal mechanisms is critical for its parallels with the current US situation.

     I see a lot of congruence b/w 1933 onwards voting results for the NSDAP and the landslide victory Trump's reborn #AmericaFirstParty aka #MAGA-#GOP received in last year's elections, 2...

     The NSDAP never won the total vote within the DE electoral system, even though the final "democratic" elections entailed massive intimidations + terror.

     The MAGATs won 50.6% of the Electoral College vote (220/435,) but due to the questionable 1st-past-the-post system.

     OK, but that is #SteveBannon's personal opinion.
     While I agree with a lot of the statements, his motivation is quite obvious: he has lost mist influence on tRump.

     While his techbro's capabilities can make him shine, or at least get him headlines, he will not discard Elmo. Both are ruthless entrepreneurs, I don't think tRump will be able, or want to, share #Bannon's xenophobic and racist, chauvinistic stance on B1 immigrant visas.

     ...The #TrumpCoup 2024 was a hostile takeover of the USA by the #TechnoFeudalist #oligarchs. Having a (skilled) labor shortage can only be anathema to all of them. Currently, I cannot see any chance for #Bannon's views to prevail, lest he do a successful #RöhmPutsch 2.0. And I don't see that happening either.
