I dunno ... I guess maybe they optimized the code? or wrote smarter code?
Remembering that gamedev era of time when PCs could barely scroll a background and underdog id Software came around and "just" made 3D stuff by approaching things differently.

@djlink my experience of a lot of dev in the US is that a lot of places focus on faster to develop over end efficiency. All our software is bloated web crap now. And US dev salaries have been inflated for years. It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that someone could do it faster & cheaper by just actually trying to do that

@sinbad @djlink What scares me a bit is that the "normal US response" to that kind of emergency is "you're paid too much"... salaries will sink eventually, so deep that no one will ever seek them. (got it? deep... seek? haha! ...fck I'm so tired...)

@on_code @djlink lots of people (especially in games) are definitely not paid too much but in big tech the salaries have got pretty silly

@sinbad @on_code yeah salaries in gamedev are bad, and there's tons of talent there, it's a very punishing field and most do out of love for it.

@on_code @djlink On the high side. $200-300k including benefits is not at all unusual for a "normal" dev

@djlink @sinbad when you say "in big tech thesalaries have got pretty silly", in what direction?
I'm a gamedev myself, I barely know what money looks like. -

@djlink @on_code I guess it's just supply & demand, lots of people will work in games for little because it's their dream and that gets exploited. While in big tech they're constantly in an arms race just trying to fill their massive staff so throw daft money at almost anyone. Ofc they're also based in extremely expensive places a lot of the time - although that's largely because the big tech firms were there splashing the cash so it's been self-reinforcing

@sinbad @djlink @on_code I've seen the referenced to as the "passion tax". People in the games industry put up with a lot more
