Is there a way to send to a list in the default interface? Or in advanced interfaces? Like, if I want to send family photos just to people I've marked "close friends and family".
@evan You can tag them all in by hand and select "Mentioned people only", but that seems kind of clumsy if the list gets large. I don't know if lists are addressable in any protocol-level way: they seem more like UX features from what I've poked around with.
@drq@Gargron OK. I think if a server can handled distributing to followers only, it should be able to handle distributing to a list, too. I'm going to put it on my list of things to think about as I learn about this platform.
@evan There are Fediverse implementations working on having a Circles-like sending control feature, like @bonfire. But nothing stable I know of so far.
@schmittlauch@bonfire It's useful! I'll see if I can figure out how to make a feature request in the Mastodon repo. I'm going to take some time to get to know the network before I start making requests.
@evan the way I’ve always imagined this working on fedi is:
1. Circles are defined by account; don’t do lists, curating people is weird. Do an alt account, instead!
2. But some “circles” are defined collectively, and those are just like mailing lists; join an instance as a foreign account, subscribe to the local feed & post into that instance as your foreign identity.
I don’t think (2) exists today in Mastodonland, but we’re not far off? @darius?
