Kevin Beaumont (gossithedog@cyberplace.social)'s status on Friday, 24-Jan-2025 05:10:51 JST Kevin Beaumont The Fediverse - the network of decentralised social network apps - has grown almost 40% over the last few weeks in terms of active users (almost all of which are new user accounts), and the increase currently shows no sign of slowing down.

FinchHaven sfba (finchhaven@sfba.social)'s status on Friday, 24-Jan-2025 06:27:58 JST FinchHaven sfba So is that how you do it -- make that graph look like it's actually showing something since the recent formatting change?
Looks like you're looking on your phone, and the graph show some uplift at the recent end
Myself, looking full-screen 1920@1080@60p on a 32 inch monitor, full-screen Firefox browser tab, I see only the faintest, softest curves upward
Pretty unimpressive, really
Also interesting to note that the time scale is daily for me with a significant gap between data points, while you've got four-day data points all run together
Interesting to consider *how* the data is presented affects the message delivered, I guess
Bet DanSup and Gargron like the data rendition you see better than the one I see...

FinchHaven sfba (finchhaven@sfba.social)'s status on Friday, 24-Jan-2025 07:20:27 JST FinchHaven sfba I have FediDB open in a tab daily
Some time ago I noticed a formatting change (really it was done with the time distribution) whereby in a browser tab, full screen HD 32" monitor, the top page, lead graphs were all virtually flat lines
Just thought to myself 'who would want this data portrayed in such an uninformative way?' but I see now it was reformatted for phones, because as we all know, *everyone* views the web through an "app" on their phones
Docktorow really needs a re-write to discuss the "enappification of the Internet"
That "enshitification" shchtick is so 2000s

Sergio (sergiodomeyko@mastodon.online)'s status on Friday, 24-Jan-2025 07:50:38 JST Sergio @GossiTheDog I am still wondering where mastodon is on users since they took down their hourly update several months ago. I recall that they had passed 15million and growing. What is the new magic number? @Mastodon #MastodonUsers @mastodonusercount

Ya that one shutting down is what inspired me to spin this one up. I can't speak for who ran that account, why it shut down or what exactly contributed to it's counts but I've changed the source code that powered it because of some shortcomings it had. If an instance grew or shrank too fast it would ignore the count and if someone redirected a domain or had dev/stage domains it duplicated the numbers. It also relied on instances.social. -

Mastodon Users (usercounts@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 25-Jan-2025 06:50:08 JST Mastodon Users @BeAware sorry I missed this. Right now it's anything that complies with mastodon API structure. Namely, the /api/v1/instance endpoint and /api/v1/instance/peers is used to learn about new instance URLs. Future state might include Misskey API compatibility as per the poll I recently ran.
