MAGA rhetoric made it seem like DEI initiatives was putting tiny feeble women and wheelchair-bound crossdressers in the Navy SEALs and everyone was laughing at us
It's so stupid, but like you should be able to agree that we want top talent doing important government jobs, not Walmart Greeters.
(even tho the gov never pays top dollar for talent lol so it's not like we'll have it in the gov anyway)- Another Linux Walt Alt likes this.

Most people never interact with the gov unless it's police or the DMV
A lot of people don't like female police officers (at least not doing patrol)
A lot of people have bad experiences at the DMV
I particularly remember in WI there was someone working at the DMV that was like 4'9", couldn't possibly guess their gender, and had only one hand. It made the entire process slower than it needed to be and they didn't have good people skills.
It doesn't give a great impression that our gov is being run well. 🤷 -

@jjg that's not my opinion, but an example of what these MAGA folks see and how they think about things -

You can't instill empathy in people that don't have it. I don't think it can really be learned once you've reached adulthood. Maybe those pathways can be reopened with psychedelics and therapy, but that's kind of a voluntary procedure.
Dem leadership always seems to think that if they just appeal to the empathetic voter base with these types of initiatives that everything will be alright and America will come together on it.
But it won't happen like that. It never has. The only thing that will change minds is positive experiences with people from different backgrounds and most people will never have the time or opportunity for it once they've reached adulthood.
Remember, a lot of work towards race relations has happened because of wars we were involved in: WWII, Vietnam, etc. People of different backgrounds served side by side and stopped fearing the "other".
Dems really really need to get better at branding and finding common ground on issues. They need to be willing to manipulate GOP voters into agreeing with them on things too by better controlling the narrative and a huge part of that is the branding.Taylan (Now 18% More Deranged) and Another Linux Walt Alt like this. -

Trump is going to do these workplace raids on the undocumented workers. It's going to suck. But the people who need the wakeup call won't get it. It's going to be politically motivated to only affect his opponents.
Biden, Obama, and even Clinton should have done it too. With surgical precision. And it could have made everyone come together on finding a solution.
If I was in that position I'd have gone after all the undocumented workers across the entire food industry. From farmers to those working in the slaughterhouses.
Cows can't go without milking. Fruits can't be left unpicked. The chicken is going to rot if nobody's processing it for packaging and distribution.
Target these places while making public speeches about how evil the corporations and farms are for using undocumented labor. Make those grocery prices spike. And make speeches demanding Congress to do the right thing to solve the crisis because after all, you're only enforcing the laws and Congress has the right to change them by giving them a path to citizenship.
It would work if Dems had the balls to force the GOP to defend the use of undocumented labor. Put them on their heels. Make the farmers BEG for their employees to have work visas so they don't have to sell their farms to Big Ag.Another Linux Walt Alt likes this. -

oh wait, but the Dems will never do this because they're being flooded with cash from the 10 corporations that own the entire food industry and they're afraid they'll lose too many campaigns if the money faucet goes dry -

@feld @thatbrickster they just don't say the name of it. there are numerous teachings specific to it and they are present in many many places. it is fundamentally different system than what we were taught in the 80s and most of the 90s. it didn't exist when affirmative action was implemented, it wasn't in their brains, it wasn't what we were taught as kids about the reasons you are supposed to care about what happens to people that are a different color or religion than you. -
