Know why the US right keeps winning stuff? Because we're 2 days into a new administration and already the left is doing its best to fracture. “Coalition? What's that? Purity tests for all! If you agree with me 99% of the time, I’m going to kick you to the curb about the other 1% you said you don't have strong opinions about!”

When I hear "I'm protesting against the Democrats because…”, what I hear is “I support Trump's plans because…”, as it has the same end result.

And it's not that the Dems are perfect, *not by a long stretch*. Don't "correct" me. IDGAF. I know they're flawed. But they're also literally the only opposition to Trump’s plans. Sometimes you've gotta pick your battles, and the US left is pathologically awful at doing so.

@binsk That's exactly it. Republicans and Libertarians grouse at each other, but ultimately put that aside to accomplish their awful goals together.

Today I'm hearing progressives complain that AOC isn’t left enough so she might as well be Trump. *That's how the right wins.*

@tek yep. lots of them on the fediverse, too. refusing to have a bigger tent leaves you vulnerable to bigger groups who put differences aside to run the table on you.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt By US standards, they're the left. I know they're not by, say, EU standards. No argument there. But in the US, they're nearly universally described as the "left" party.

I'm also frustrated by their utter lack of getting stuff done, but they've been reasonably effective at blocking the worst GOP plans. Since Congress is completely R+D, and Trump has nearly complete support of the R, I'm going to support any D resistance, even if I'm not a huge fan of Ds.

@tek as much as I respect you, please stop referring to Dems as Left. They are not in any shape or form left, just slightly less right-wing. As long as corporate interests rule the Democratic Party leadership, the Left (society) has no representation. Recent history has shown even when in power Dems fail to do anything substantive to address issues faced by those outside the donor class.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt Yes, absolutely. That’s the origin story of this Mastodon instance, even. We have to do it ourselves because the cavalry's not coming.

But we still need help at the federal level to block as much as possible from ever becoming law in the first place.

@tek and I've seen this story play out already enough times I can't trust the Democratic Party. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. Too many communities are at risk to wait for electoral change. We have to act on our own to address those issues while also resisting the fascist scumbags.

@Technofeudalhermit If the GOP had better opinions on any of that, then you'd have a point. They don't. Both parties share those awful ideas.

But, one party does that and acknowledges that the trans people in my life have the right to peacefully exist, that global warming is a critical threat, that science is a thing. The other party just took office and immediately rolled all those ideas back.

So how's that head in the sand approach working out for you?

@tek opposition? Offerring the most lethal military. Increasing detentions after Trump's departure? Funding and enabling a new genocide? And you, running an instance, promising "not to forget" those who didn't want to go along with the program then deleting it? Because we couldn't believe any longer the efficacy of voting our way out of oligarchy and didn't want to support those already harming hundreds of thousands but bragging about it less. Duplicitous "good guys" terrify me too
