See, the thing is it doesn't matter if Musk is doing a nazi salute or not. Because at the end of the day very few people would change their minds as a result of this interpretation. People who like the right do, deep down, see nothing wrong with fascism. They'll denounce it if they are caught in the act, sure. But the values they hold are not incompatible with fascism.
@sgillies that's not what I mean. I mean people are discussing if this is hand open, if the position of his thumb is this or that way. Fuck that. We already know he's a nazi, that was absolutely outrageous even if accidental and if someone needs official confirmation whether that was a sieg heil or not, they are already too far gone.
@melissawm I think it does matter. It's a slap to the face of our institutions, to force them to choose between getting in line or getting out of line. A newspaper or politician that quibbles about the salute will do the same about worse stuff in the future.
@melissawm It does matter, but for another reason.
It moves the ”overton window” of accepted civilized behaviour. It encourages people you didn’t know were nazis to be so more openly.
More encouragement translates to more harrassment & violence. Fascism stays down only because we beat it down. It rises again when it’s not being beat down anymore.
This state we were in, it was earned and upkept, an uphill battle was fought for it. Going back is going down, so it’s quick & fast.
