    @xtaran asks:

    Triggered by https://urbanists.social/@straphanger/113832845074651380

    Q5. What are #BikeNite participants' views on bike sharing in general? Especially because most participants seem to be avid riders and most if not all seem to have their own cycle.

    Do you use bike sharing services? Even if you have your own cycle? Do you only use bike sharing services if you are in another town? Do you have preferences for specific bike sharing services? If so, why?

      #BikeNite A5: I was a member of the first bike share in #WaterlooRegion in 2011 run by #TheWorkingCentre. Mostly I used public transit to go to work and straight back home so I used it only twice. It stopped after two years. There have been other bikeshares, some with big announcements that never got off the ground. Now we have these untethered scooters and bikes littering the streets. They need a phone app to activate, which I will never use.

      I might use a #BikeShare if I were visiting another city, but only if they're more like vending machines that take cash or a credit card. I'm not putting their geolocating apps on my phone.

      And I wish our municipal government had not granted the contract to tetherless bikes and scooters, but had required docking stations. I really don't like all those bikes and scooters abandoned everywhere, blocking sidewalks and park paths.

      @ascentale @xtaran A5. I use our city's bike share system maybe a few times a year, if my bike's in the shop or otherwise out of commission. It's fine. My main gripe is that they switched entirely from mini kiosks at each station to a mobile app (and not a small one, either).

      They have a small number of e-bikes as well, and a surprising number of food delivery people rely on them.

      At the protest rides I've been to recently, a bunch of people were riding bike share bikes.

      @nev @ascentale #BikeNite A5 followup: Yep, requiring an app (and hence a smartphone) which is very likely leaking way more of your data than necessary, is one of my gripes with nearly every bike sharing system. (Except maybe those Brompton rental boxes seen in the UK, not sure if they require more than a credit card.)
