Would be interesting to know if TikTok users from the EU that are currently in the USA can still access TikTok. Do they block based on accounts or on IP addresses?
@ulyssesalmeida Which makes sense, as the court order in Brazil demanded that. Here the situation is different. TikTok hasn’t been banned by a law or court, TikTok decided themselves to block access from the USA. And I wonder if they implemented it based on account info or if they use geoip or a combination. We only have a short time period to find out as this self-inflicted ban will most likely be gone again soon.
@Reshirams_Rad_Slam That would be Oracle, and yes, I am quite sure they temporarily stopped their services for TikTok/ByteDance. But TikTok/ByteDance could easily switch to serving content from other datacenters/service providers they use or run themselves.
@theron29@Kadsenchaos I also don’t trust American algorithms for timelines in centralised social networks. I wouldn’t trust European ones either. That’s why I’m here, in the algo-free zone :)
And, as expected (see further up in this thread), Trump will sign an executive order tomorrow to restore access to TikTok in the USA. Now proposes a 50/50 joint venture instead of full ownership transfer. (link to post in ALT of screenshot)
@jwildeboer That way only 50% of the app’s algo will be CCP propaganda and only 50% of our private data will be scooped up for intel, influence, and profiling?
@masek I don't think there will be a bidding competition. The law can be replaced with a new one that allows for a joint venture style setup as hinted at by Trump. This is all just a storm in a teacup, mostly aimed at publicity and headlines, IMHO.
