I'm feeling politically confused and upset.

I know that the USA is heading into a hard time, and that a lot of vulnerable people are going to be in danger. This change of administration is hazardous.

But it's also literally the end of the genocidal war in Gaza in which the Biden administration was complicit. The end of the administration coincides with the end of the war.

I don't think it's sane or reasonable to do arbitrage on human lives -- one undocumented worker in Chicago for one grandma in Rafah. That's not how human rights work. It's not how decency works.

I guess I am mad that, since 2016, as a progressive I have had to be on the side of the neoliberal deep state. That I have felt the need to defend institutions and norms against attacks from the populist right -- institutions that are corrupt, unjust, and oppressive.

@evan I get how you're feeling, but I don't think this is at all the end. I doubt they'll get to phase 2 before the bombing starts again.

And I think I'm going to let that go. I don't give a fuck about how the normal chain of command at the FBI is supposed to be run. I am not going to fight for the filibuster. I am not going to hit the streets in defense of the General Accounting Office.

But I most definitely not be campaigning for a neoliberal unilateralist, either. That world is almost gone; it ends when Joe Biden boards Marine One back to Delaware. I am not willing to fight for it in order to hold off the MAGA horde any more. I want to put my energy, time and money into what comes next.

Meaning: a US that's a global citizen instead of a rogue nation. An America that cares for everyone, where everyone gets a base level of support and services, regardless of what that means for the markets. A place where equality matters, and where rights are universal.

If the Democratic Party is going to do the work to analyze itself, take a look in the mirror, and get there, I will be in it. But I don't know if I'm going to work for the Party just because they'll keep the Trumpists out. Because so far, in the last decade, they haven't.

I have been particularly appalled by the Democratic chatter since the election. Days after an election where they were saying that a loss to Trump would be the end of democracy, party leaders were chirruping along to plans and strategies for the 2026 midterms. No talk about how we, together, are going to organize to defend vulnerable people in this new undemocratic country.

So, I'm going to watch who stands up for trans kids and undocumented workers and people in conflict overseas and work with them. Maybe it's AOC and Bernie, and maybe it's mutual aid groups and nonprofits. Maybe it's the UN, I don't know.

@evan It coincides with a ceasefire the Biden administration has been working on alongside Qatar. That's not an end to the war. It's a pause. Israel seems hellbent on taking Gaza so Kushner can develop beachfront properties for the wealthy to enjoy. There is a tremendous amount of politicking going on around this. I will be surprised if it approaches permanence.
