#AskFedi I wish to improve the search results / discoverability of interesting content for my self-hosted #Pixelfed instance.

I set it up earlier this week via #YunoHost and I'm having issues finding content when I look up hashtags.

As a photographer, I wanted to actively look for photos tagged with camera brand names (Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm) but so far I'm finding very few results (see screenshot). I wonder if you have any recommendations as to how to tweak my settings? Thanks in advance! ✨

@steffo not sure. I should have added for extra context that I also found 0 results for "nikon" and 3 posts for "fujifilm"

@_elena does pixelfed support relays? if so, they might be very helpful in exchanging posts with other instances!

@marcelcosta great point, maybe I have to wait for my instance to federate with more servers. I will follow more accounts (20-30) and see what happens

Sorry if its a naive reply, but it looks like a federation thing to me. In our instance you can find many photos with this hashtag. How many accounts from different servers are you following?

Maybe @dansup can put some light on how hashtags are used by pixelfed…

What does this look like? You can also just straight up add instances (like pixelfed.social) directly from what I understand.

      @everydayisextra it's hashtags...

your comment brought back memories of #Flickr – which used to surface EXIF data and give you so much information about camera gear.

That's how I was inspired to buy most of my beloved lenses back in the day 🥲

@_elena I’m curious: Does that info come from tags only or is the EXIF data being read as well?

@everydayisextra I think for portraits especially, I appreciate knowing which lens has been used (brand, focal length).

I never studied photography but I owe it all to Flickr and the detailed descriptions attached to photos - whenever I would spot a photo I loved, I would look and see which camera / lens had been used. That’s how I stumbled upon my favorite lens, a Sigma 30mm f/1.4

@_elena So in other words you’d specifically appreciate it when photographers add hashtags about the equipment used for any given shot, right? I did that when I started posting shots on IG and had the feeling it had absolutely zero impact. I don’t mind going back to doing it, I was just hoping to get a possible glimpse on the EXIF data when needed. It’s the same for me that I see shots where I simply want to know what camera and lens and settings were used to achieve that look.

@roddie @marcelcosta thank you for the info. I’ve found it easier to pull in posts / connect to the broader Pixelfed galaxy on desktop (not so much on its mobile app). I will follow more and more accounts from different instances and try add / follow more hashtags to see if it makes a difference

@_elena @marcelcosta I think even if your server federates with a load of other servers, it will only pull in posts from people that users on your server follow and their replies. In order to see all the posts from another server you would need to use a relay. You might be able to browse for a hashtag on the main Pixelfed server and then copy and paste the links of posts into the search of your own server (I'm not sure it's fully functioning just now now though)

      • Tommi 🤯

@tommi @michaelc this is the "workaround" I found - from self-hosting a Pixelfed instance that felt cut off from the rest of the Fediverse:

      1) go to FediDB's Pixelfed page: https://fedidb.org/software/pixelfed

      2) Sort instances by popularity

      3) Go to the homepage of the top 10 Pixelfed instances

      4) for each one, click on Explore and find cool pics

      5) follow at least one account from each instance

      6) wait for federation to propagate

@michaelc Yes I opened this issue a while ago and it still does not seem to be solved. I am a #Pixelfed fan, but there are some federation fundamentals that it would be very important to be fixed ASAP!

Basically it starts federating once you start following other accounts in that instance. What does your admin panel look like when you go to instances?
