@alienghic Interesting. I used to fly to America for work a lot and what struck me is how localised their news is. Not a single peep about the world. In Malaysia, our papers' international news is very robust, and taken from newspapers around the region and the world. So, we have news from AP, Reuters, China Daily, Guardian etc etc, syndicated in our papers. On top of that, the news is in a few languages. I realised how ... unique Malaysia is! @MisuseCase

@alienghic @MisuseCase @liztai My experience of China is that most people are almost as parochial and ignorant about the world as Americans. Overall I found the PRC and USA to be strikingly culturally similar. (Anecdote: a new colleague asked me where I'm from. And then, "how many women are you allowed to marry there?") My general theory is that this is nothing to do with the media, rather both countries are large enough that there's just very little reason to engage with any other place. Whereas in Europe and SE Asia, active interest in neighbouring countries is an essential survival trait.
