@gwynnion I didn't read those books. I'm clueless on the Sandman series. I don't even know what they are about?

@timberwraith The short answer is the Lord of Dreams escapes captivity and sets out to reclaim his kingdom, plus a shit load of random mythological and DC comics references. It was an extremely Gen X thing at one point.

@gwynnion @timberwraith And there's one story in it that strikes me as a confession. Struggling author has become a success by taking possession of a literal muse (Calliope) and raping her every time he needs inspiration...

@timberwraith I tried repeatedly to get through "American Gods" and gave up. I read the comic book version of "Neverwhere" but it was kinda dull. I never saw what was so special about the guy.

@gwynnion I thought "American Gods" was a novel concept compared to the sci-fi I was engrossed in at the time. So, it was interesting to me.

But again, Gaiman was a one book wonder for me. I didn't go back, LOL.

@timberwraith I think Gaiman has a certain brand of British quaintness that is whimsically appealing to Americans for some reason but even "Sandman" tested my patience. His most famous stuff is his most meta for a reason.

Like JKR, I only read a single novel by Neil Gaiman. I had a housemate who was really into him and he encouraged me to read "American Gods."

I remember it being OK? Better than the one Harry Potter book I bothered to read.

But I stopped having much interest in books that don't center female characters a long time ago and I prefer buying speculative fiction from female authors.

So, I never bothered to read another one of his books (or another JKR/Harry Potter book either).
