      @EUCommission So you're going to take steps to rectify the extreme negligence of using proprietary software in a medical setting, or you're going to set some requirements that don't really going to achieve anything?

      @spla @EUCommission No, that will not help, considering that Linux is a proprietary kernel that won't operate on its own.

      The zeroth step for implementing security is to eliminate all proprietary software.

      Security would zeroth require installing GNUboot (would require a court to order business give the keys to the digital handcuffs and also documentation how to use the hardware to the users for all of the computers), install GNU/Linux-libre and the install free software onto that (i.e. GNU Health).

      @mikkaels @EUCommission Yes, that's the very problem I wrote about.

      The fact that medical structures risks people's lives with proprietary software is insane.

      @Suiseiseki @EUCommission@europa.eu I don't get your point. Every medical structure is 100% free to use proprietary software or not 🤔

      @mikkaels @EUCommission By the same lieu that a programmer deserves to be rewarded for writing a useful program, a programmer deserves to be punished for writing a proprietary one.

      It's quite simple really - there needs to be a requirement that for each and every medical device, the source code under a free license of the software needs to provided, otherwise it's criminal to pay for it (with such arrangement, the programmers would be paid the same (programmers typically get paid a fixed wage, no matter how profitable the software they write for a business is)).

      That software then should be published and checked by many people and any vulnerabilities and mistakes worked out.

      As for the devices themselves, someone in the hospital should be assigned with setting the hospital's signatures for each device and keeping the software on each machine updated.

      @mikkaels @EUCommission Free means freedom; https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html

      Free does not mean gratis no matter how many ads you watch and believe.

      Many programmers make a living writing and maintaining free software, as they are paid to do so.

      Most programmers develop free software, as most programmers write custom software, which is free for the only user.

      There are unfortunately a few thousand programmers who write proprietary malware and we need to stamp such abhorrent practice out, for what is right and just and for the good of humanity.

      @Suiseiseki @EUCommission I don't understand how exactly are programmers expected to make a living writing and maintaining free software 🤔

      @mikkaels @EUCommission >towards a libre, paid software
      What kind of software do you want?

      Typically most free software is available gratis as it costs $0.000001 to send a copy - typically payment is for something not so trivial, for example a warranty, or support, or modifications.

      Quite a lot of free software is available from these software mirrors;
      https://www.gnu.org/software/
      https://mirrors.middlendian.com/

      One example of a paid free program is; https://ardour.org/

      You can purchase the precompiled free binaries, or compile it yourself from the free source code, or download a binary from a GNU/Linux distro's package manager.

      @Suiseiseki @EUCommission@europa.eu Thanks for the explanation! Unfortunately English uses the same word for "gratis" and "liber", which is unfortunate 😕
      Could you please redirect me (a link will be enough) towards a liber, paid software so I can have a look at it?
