Daniel Supernault (dansup@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Jan-2025 18:30:15 JST Daniel Supernault @ppatel how can we improve this? I'm open to making alt text easier, perhaps with on-device, privacy protecting AI models, but that is another discussion

Pratik Patel (ppatel@mstdn.social)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Jan-2025 18:30:16 JST Pratik Patel @dansup Oh I know. Unfortunately, I've learned that, just because a feature exists, does not mean that people will actively use it. There's something about photos and a platform dedicated to them, ... It's about a culture. While I'm not saying that people will ignore descriptions altogether, culture will matter as much as the toolset. So far, I've seen mixed results.

The Tepid Emperor (thetepidemperor@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Jan-2025 20:10:00 JST The Tepid Emperor @dansup @ppatel I use the IceCubes app and it has a generate alt text option that I’ve found surprisingly good. I do tend to then edit the generated text to add additional context.

normy foxyoreos (foxyoreos@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Jan-2025 20:22:30 JST normy foxyoreos @ppatel @dansup I've advocated for this for a while on Mastodon, but I guess there's no harm in suggesting it for Pixelfed as well since feature development seems to be happening a bit faster on there: an (optional) ability to have alt text suggestions in the UI without needing to use the alt4you/alt4me tags might possibly help a lot with this?
Getting a suggestion as a notification and not cluttering replies, and being able to apply it with a tap instead of copy-pasting into an edited post.
