Ordered an MNT Reform Next https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next

The world really needs an open hardware laptop that can be repaired, understood, and has an actual community future. I think MNT's Reform Next is the best shot at that we've got. I'm excited about it!

I really believe in @mntmn and the rest of the MNT staff and community. I've had great interactions and everything they make has been getting better and better. The Reform Next seems *incredibly* well designed and thought through.

I think here are the big things that really need to shake out:

      - Guix support is a must. Thankfully, Guix support looks like it could be possible; see https://community.mnt.re/t/guix-and-reform/173/30
      - Blender support would be a very strong... I'll put it above nice-to-have, because I'm going to need a separate desktop art station if this can't handle Blender 4.X, and I'm not sure it can yet (I don't need advanced stuff, just enough to do a bit of blenderin')
      - I hope and dream for RISC-V as the future tho!

No, haven’t put in the effort yet. It looks like there is a branch with support being worked on but I haven’t tried it.

@cwebber hopefully @efraim will finish the integration of the bootstrapping in guix and you'll have many reasons to be happy after that

@Crazypedia It feels like building a 15in variant could be possible since all the CAD files are there, once the dust around the main design settles. I dunno though!

      @cwebber I really need it available in a 15-in screen 🥲

BTW, the RK3588, it's pretty nice but maybe it's not the most exciting SoC imaginable right now. But the important thing here is the modularity of the system. All of the rest of MNT's systems have been upgradeable in terms of the processor board, the Reform Next will certainly be the same.

@ttamttam Guix is amazing and also its community is incredibly good and nice

People make assumptions because it's GNU-affiliated but Guix is wonderful to be a part of. I love it!

Wait, a Guix user in the wild? How do you like it? The G in Guix kinda scares me and I have a stereotype of Guix just being a version of Nix that tells you that "What you are referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux." Unfounded I hope?

@cwebber I'm torn between MNT Reform Next and MNT Pocket Reform. I'm drawn to the pocket, specially cause what I do most of the time is just writing and I tend to love small screens. Still, I can't make a choice.

Were you tempted by the pocket one?

@soapdog I also have a Pocket! I really like it!

It does take some fiddling, but decreasingly so from when it first came out.

@psyhackological IIRC @frameworkcomputer isn't open hardware, and it's not as community oriented

@cwebber which CPU board you went with, is your Pocket a RK3588 as well?

Would love to read a review about it if you ever publish one (but zero pressure), there's a lack of reviews and impressions from pocket owners out there.
