Part of being an immigrant is looking at Chinese restaurant menus and guessing (often correctly) what type of regional Chinese food they serve. They tend to have a ‘Chinese food for everyone else’ menu and then often a handful of stuff that is maybe their true heart’s desire.. at a very poorly rated Chinese restaurant in Marina, CA, that upon further investigation looks like it does excellent Korean Chinese.

The presence of ‘jjampong’ and ‘jjajjangmyeon’ (and lots of Korean speaking people) gives it away. Also they proudly state house made noodles. So yay

Oh man. The jjampong is super good.

This is at Lee’s Garden in Marina. Better than the two Korean Chinese spots I have in SF

Sometimes the clues are hidden in specific dishes served, or in the Chinese characters. Even at Vietnamese restaurants, if they have Chinese characters on the menu I try to read them. They’ll say things like chiu chow noodles or like Nam Vang noodles in Chinese which will tell me exactly what type of Vietnamese Chinese food it is.

They don’t really make this searchable

This reminds me of how I once went to a noodle shop in Daly City to order the laksa. The guy was like, you’re Malaysian? My laksa is not the same as yours, mine is from the south of Malaysia where I was a refugee not the northern kind just telling you in case you get mad

And I was like oh I’m from southern Malaysia / Singapore and that’s ’my laksa’ too and it was the best laksa I’ve ever had in the Bay Area, even better than the Singaporean / Malaysian places (Noodle Station in Daly City)

@sarajw given that southern and northern Vietnamese people hate each other’s pho passionately.. quite similar I guess
