JFC - my other newsfeeds (FB, Bsky) are driving me so insane I'm going to have to take an indefinite break. The news (which I'm staying abreast of on a "pull" basis - when I'm prepared for it), keeps coming every few posts and it's so disturbing I'm literally losing sleep. Time to come here where the filters work better and more folks tag and hide things under CW better. The algorithms also definitely DON'T help.
It's going to be a wild 2025 hearing just how wild every 5 minutes is NOT good.

@toddtyrtle I didn't even bother with Blue sky because I find Mastodon way better due to the safeguards. Having come off toxic social media sites like Weibo (Chinese Twitter, which is even worse than the English one), I really appreciate the oasis of calm here.

@toddtyrtle I definitely need to do that on Bsky. While I followed only those whose views are like mine, that ended up being a firehose of reporting offense after offense (because that's what's happening). *sigh* Point me toward the Shire, please.

@CakesOfPan My first step on other sites was to just be brutal about unfollowing. It helped some but some folks seem to spread their day spreading fear and anger. Multiply that by a a few dozen people like that and it gets out of hand.

@toddtyrtle Earnest question: Bluesky doesn't have keyword filters like Mastodon? I found those a lifesaver. Speaking of which, now that a certain term is coming to be, I really should strengthen them keywords lol
About Weibo, I didn't think it was possible, but yes, it's way worse than Twitter. To quote a Weibo-er: "Weibo is a toilet, and if you're reading this, you're eating my sh!t".
I tell a friend it's like logging in to see groups of people mass cyber bullying people or each other.
Chinese netizens are spectacularly mean, and rumour-mongering is a way of life there. Many actors' careers have been ruined by unsubstantiated rumours.

@liztai Wow - I can't imagine worse than Twitter. I found Bluesky was reasonably good - until after the US election when there was a huge migration of trolls, bots, and people on all sides who thrive on spreading outrage. That last one is the kicker for me. I follow someone because we're like-minded and then it's nothing but unactionable outrage shared on their part.

@liztai Yeah - it has some but the topics are getting broader. Thanks to recent news I'd have to block "Canada" to get the worst of it out. Seems that the folks I'm following here are mostly avoiding that or tagging with us politics which helps a lot.
Wow - Weibo sounds more awful than I could imagine. Like some of the darker spaces of the English-speaking net.
