@tokyo_0 The bulk of people who are not in the fedi are not saying it's too complicated. They're not saying anything at all because they're entirely unaware or barely aware of its existence and there's nothing making it attractive enough to devote attention to learning about it.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Sunday, 12-Jan-2025 15:19:41 JST Rich Felker @tokyo_0 Incidentally, in my experience, youngs are WAY AHEAD in being able to see perverse profit motives behind ads, sponsorships, platform manipulations, etc. than olds. Because they grew up having to navigate this hostility rather than just being bitter about what was lost.

culpaplex (hp@social.sdf.org)'s status on Sunday, 12-Jan-2025 19:01:35 JST culpaplex @dalias I am in agreement with the vibes of this, but I don't understand a) how "they grew up having to navigate this hostility" is not rather similar to "they don't remember a time when the internet wasn't a bunch of platforms controlled by corporations" and b) how "the fedi is full of olds with condescending attitudes towards them" doesn't contradict "they're barely aware of its existence".

The only people I recall saying it's too complicated weren't quote-unquote young people, but journalists. A couple of years ago, when it came to prominence after the first big twitter exodus, they wrote it up as if they had to solve a 5-dimensional rubics hypercube to get started. But any time someone toots about the culture being very hostile, it resonates with so many people. It's on par with people making their first Wikipedia edit and getting chewed out for minor errors.

I see cw as a tool you can use not to be a microaggression against your followers (thereby losing them) as appropriate for who's following you.

Callisto (callisto@disabled.social)'s status on Sunday, 12-Jan-2025 23:27:22 JST Callisto @Rhodium103 @dalias @tokyo_0 Somebody I used to follow on the hellsite, and recently re-found on Bullshit Kentucky, commented there that he isn't here because he felt the culture of content warnings is equivalent to a nanny state, and gave the example of California's Prop 65. He is *not* someone who's generally insensitive, nor does he often post triggering things. Just as you say. I'm guessing he got chewed out once and left. Maybe even got gently reminded and took it as being chewed out.

Heard it a lot from people who wouldn't leave the hellsite during the Great Migration 2.5 years ago (which is when I joined here). Seeing it now, with great frustration, as those same people now leave Shitter for Bullshit Kentucky. Also seeing it from my friends who are now considering migrating off Facebook (I personally need to stay there for now, for my volunteer work).
