Just a wild thought. Maybe we shouldn’t tell people how to express themselves or what to express interest in.

Besides, this whole “rawr slop” thing makes us all sound like old cranks complaining about loud rock n’ roll at the local sock hop.

@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org You could have a chronological timeline or something of that sort, but at that point you're talking about an experience so far removed that I can't see how it could be considered a competitor to tiktok

@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org I didn't say that they were new, but I would suggest that they're worse now (at least in terms of harm) than they previously were.

@evelyn Is it the reels that are harmful, or how algorithmic feeds are utilized to push that dopamine hit?

@evelyn Short form reels aren’t new. They’ve literally been with us since video was a thing. But now because of smartphone usage, they’ve been revived.

@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org Maybe it makes us sound like old men yelling at clouds, but my experience with youtube shorts alone has convinced me that this is a concept which is, in a word, shit.

@evelyn without instant AI discovery it's basically not like tiktok at all, it doesn't replicate anything about tiktok that made tiktok become the thing everyone uses, contains none of its unique utility

@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org @mjgardner@social.sdf.org The #Fediverse was (in my mind) created as a separate space, away from all the bad influences and characteristics of the already existing (proprietary) social media platforms. Is it not just as disrespectful to barge in and demand they apploud that same garbage being injected into their own space?

There's already a platform for those who want TikTok reels, it's called TikTok.

@mjgardner You’re right, but people are saying TikTok-style reels shouldn’t be allowed on the Fediverse because it’s “slop”.

And that’s disrespectful to an entire form of culture and expression.

@atomicpoet IMHO that’s orthogonal to the issues #SCOTUS is deliberating over the #TikTok ban law. But it’s hard to separate that from the way some people are acting like the town council in ‘Footloose.’

@mjgardner@social.sdf.org @atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org it’s a self-contradiction to create an open system with the principle of keeping certain elements outIs it, though? We live in a free and quite open country, but its still not desired to bring in cocaine into the country. It is quite reasonable to have an open system, allowing everyone in who wants, so long as they're not ruining the experience for those already there.

@tyil @atomicpoet I have bad news: it’s a self-contradiction to create an open system with the principle of keeping certain elements out.

Don’t bitch about stuff getting through your imaginary wall.
