   The past few days, I've been toying with the idea of setting up a single-user Mastodon instance.

   I'm currently looking at Masto.host as a hosting provider. The prices seem reasonable?

   First, for those who have rolled their own instance: How has the experience been? Any advice you'd share with a self-hosting newbie? Any pitfalls or downsides?

   Have you gone with a specialist managed prover like Masto.host?

   Are there any major advantages or disadvantages over a vanilla cPanel web hosting provider that supports Mastodon?

   Another option I'm toying with is using a single instance of Friendica as my Fedi home, and consolidating everything there, including photos.

   Are there any managed hosting providers that support Friendica?

     @ed @ajsadauskas I don't have experience with Masto.host but I purchased a VPN plan (for 5.99 a month), installed the superb #YunoHost, and set up my own Fediverse instance with the app #GoToSocial. It's here: @elena

     I've had a really WONDERFUL experience so far, even if I barely know what I'm doing. YunoHost's documentation is top notch and you can install hundreds of apps on it (even Friendica)

     @ajsadauskas I think that @_elena might help sharing some insight on some of the self-hosting part since she's experimenting with it as well.

     As for Masto.host there's nothing but nice things to say: the guy that runs it knows its stuff. He's polite, quick in answering to even the most basic questions and extremely helpful in understanding how an instance works.

     - I have been their customer with my single-use instance since 2018
     - I had zero problems in all these years
     - I don't have to care about updates and breaking changes as that is their service that I pay for

     So overall: very satisfied
