Watching Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and marveling at how I can recognize almost all of San Francisco in the movie.

I don’t think I can recognize urban locations in Singapore after 5 or even 10 years, because everything changes there. All the time.

I used to say sometimes I’d leave for a month and return and the road in the neighborhood is completely gone, like it was never there.

But in watching Star Trek, some of the places look exactly the same

@skinnylatte watching video of SF from the 1950s makes me a little sick to my stomach. Cities shouldn’t be locked in amber but we’re so terrified of change.

Even 1906 before the quake is recognizable: https://youtu.be/sHkc83XA2dY?si=DRmRIYpMAOoHsCBn

@djcapelis yeah it’s scary and weird. Some call it charming I guess.

@skinnylatte including seeing your new work place in it right? I was recently in Sausalito for a wedding and had to go by the place they filmed the exterior shots of which still shows up on Google maps: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cetacean+Institute/@37.8590937,-122.4878256,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x8085852a1b9c24a9:0xab1032e2db718d17!8m2!3d37.8590937!4d-122.4852507!16s%2Fg%2F11h8jfhqh6?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTIxMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

@skinnylatte I get that with inner Melbourne, still has a lot of its 19th century landmarks so you can read a novel from then (eg The Mystery of a Hansom Cab) and recognise the locations.
