    Enshittification hurts everyone but rarely does it hit the wealthy hardest

    Over xmas the ski patrol started striking in Park City, the 3rd most expensive ski resort in the country, and rich folks are losing their shit

    A few finance bros default to "fuck them, their living wage is not more important than my dividends" but most are mad at Vail Resorts, which has refused to refund a dime despite the mountain being only 20% operational

    Their $358/day ticket can't buy them out of this mess

      @fuzzface
      Disclaimer: my kid and I have been doing a mom-son ski trip to Park City since 2009. For health reasons, 2024 was probably my last ski season so we overdid it. It was my biggest 2024 budget item, even with season passes

      That said, it's pretty funny to watch rich folks whine about being victims of Shareholder Primacy. It's unusual that they can't buy their way out of those consequences. Meanwhile, Vail has lost $500m in market cap over a $2/hr wage dispute

      @kims $358 a day? That is insane. I won’t shed a tear over folks having “an issue” with the strike. Isn’t Park City one of those places where people who work there can’t afford to live there?

      @fuzzface
      The math in this case says it's gotta be ego, a CEO who "refuses to let the vulgar peon workers think they can dictate their terms of employment" or whatever.

      Thing is, most problems the rich create *can* be avoided with wealth. Enshittify air travel? Fly private. Healthcare sucks? Concierge medicine. Concert and sports tix? VIP pricing (or famous friends, biz relationships, etc)

      I've mostly outgrown schaedenfreude, but there's something poetic about this episode

      @kims First off, sorry that skiing is not in your future. 🫂 Your observations are spot on. I think there is an expectation by rich folks that any problem can be solved by throwing money at it. This is certainly not reality, but wake-up calls for the rich are often too rare. I have to wonder what the thinking is that justifies fighting a very modest raise by causing chaos for customers and wrecking the value of the business. People often make no sense.

      Your observations
