   @sarajw @timbray @DavidDarnes I’m wondering what activities the term “design engineer” might encompass that aren’t core elements either of design or engineering.

   If the term is merely meant to describe a focus on e.g. usability / meeting user needs, then it does make some sense (as in: an engineer who considers user needs as high priority requirements).

     @timbray @DavidDarnes there already are design engineers in industry working in design for manufacture and with CAD etc - so it's not an unknown term :)

     The question to me is whether it can also be applied to software, i.e. UI, design systems, etc. I'm warming to the idea...

     @DavidDarnes At one level, “design” is the activity at the core of the engineering profession; could there be such a thing as a design-oblivious engineer? Would it be fair to say that your usage of the word “design” is aimed at UI design? I.e. an engineer whose focus is on front-end software?
