@tewha@arstechnica@CStamp Yes. I 100% certainly have. Had an off the cuff convo about wanting Froot Loops with my wife one morning a month or so ago and soon after ads for the cereal (!!!) appeared in my Insta feed. Not any cereal, Froot Loops.
@_elena I think it’s hilarious that some people seem to think the less likely scenario is that your smart phone *isn’t spying on you via your microphone* than it’s “just a coincidence” or it’s “your bias”.
We all know that your location data and other contact information is tracked so it’s not a large leap from that to listening to your conversations and yet so many tech savvy people seem to think it’s simply not possible. It absolutely is.
@_elena@gedeonm I’ve had similar experiences, but I was always told that that’s just how well the advertisement models are working. Not much tapping into the conversations, but extremely capable of determining the most likely product a person will be interested in, when enough context is provided.
