    @tewha @arstechnica @CStamp Yes. I 100% certainly have. Had an off the cuff convo about wanting Froot Loops with my wife one morning a month or so ago and soon after ads for the cereal (!!!) appeared in my Insta feed. Not any cereal, Froot Loops.

      @gedeonm there’s a fascinating discussion about this exact topic on Lemmy right now. Some of the comments / stories sent chills down my spine.

      Just disregard the title of the thread, the discussion is 🔥: https://lemmy.world/post/23823698

        I still don’t think companies serve you ads based on spying through your microphone - Lemmy.World
        Not my title! I do think we are being listened to. And location tracked. And it’s being passed on to advertisers. Is it apple though? Probably not is my take away from this article, but I don’t trust plenty of others, and apple still does

      @_elena I think it’s hilarious that some people seem to think the less likely scenario is that your smart phone *isn’t spying on you via your microphone* than it’s “just a coincidence” or it’s “your bias”.

      We all know that your location data and other contact information is tracked so it’s not a large leap from that to listening to your conversations and yet so many tech savvy people seem to think it’s simply not possible. It absolutely is.

      @gedeonm absolutely!

      That’s why I used to have a burner phone for Meta apps with a dongle that cut off microphone access.

      I still use that dongle from time to time, but I’ve basically deleted all my Meta (and other dodgy) accounts since the election.

      I wanna move to a phone with GrapheneOS at some point…

      @_elena @gedeonm I’ve had similar experiences, but I was always told that that’s just how well the advertisement models are working. Not much tapping into the conversations, but extremely capable of determining the most likely product a person will be interested in, when enough context is provided.
