    https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/we-d-be-stuck-alarm-as-uk-s-last-braille-typewriter-repairer-ponders-retirement/ar-AA1wQzQp?ocid=msedgntp&pc=HCTS&cvid=978f991e64434630bffd5a7b8433be83&ei=11

Alan Thorpe runs his fingers over the braille note attached to the latest repair job to arrive at his doorstep in Sheffield. Reading from the tactile note, he says: “The paper won’t wind in and the keys are jammed. Good luck.”

Thorpe, 60, is the only certified repairer in the UK of Perkins braille typewriters, the world’s most widely used braille machines. Despite advances in digital technology, these 6kg analogue machines are still a vital communication tool for blind users and are especially crucial for teaching blind children to read and write. But they need to work, so Thorpe’s talk of retirement has prompted alarm among his customers, including schools and local authorities.

“We’d be completely stuck without Alan,” says Rachel Ward, of North East Wales Sensory Support Service. She has driven from Flintshire to pick up 10 Perkins braillers that Thorpe has refurbished. She has also delivered two more machines with braille notes attached explaining what needs fixing.

Thorpe is hoping to recruit an apprentice to take on his business. If he cannot find someone suitable, he suggests that the Royal National Institute of Blind People, which is celebrating 200 years since Louis Braille invented the embossed type, could help to provide a repair service.

Another of Thorpe’s customers, from a school for visually impaired (VI) pupils with more than 100 Perkins machines, is alarmed. The customer, who asked not to be named, said: “When he retires there will potentially be no one in the UK capable of the type of repairs Alan undertakes.

@HebrideanHecate Apposite. Just this morning I was contemplating what the proliferation of touch screens on bloody everywhere and everything is doing to blind or near-blind people.

A building I visit regularly converted its lift controls from buttons to a touch screen (during covid years no less). I can't imagine how a blind or a near-blind person could possibly operate it now.

It's a horrid trend. I hate it in cars especially. Much more difficult to use touch screen controls for AC, radio, etc. than physical knobs.

Would you believe me if I told you that the freaking windshield wipers of the Tesla Model 3 have to be operated through a touch screen? (Except for spraying, if I remember correctly.)

They expect you to keep it on automatic, but the sensor is horrible and keeps turning them on in completely dry weather. And operating their speed manually is only possible via touch screen.

Oh and also, if you enable cruise control (for keeping a constant speed), they automatically go into automatic mode again, and can't be operated manually at all so long as cruise control is still enabled. Trying to do so literally pops up a message saying "can't change windshield wiper speed while using cruise control." WHY?!?

Other than that, it's a nice car. Used one for about 6 months as a company car.

@taylan @HebrideanHecate I would believe you. And I also hate this especially in cars. In fact, I suspect it'll be a deal breaker when we have to swap cars. If at that point it's even possible to get a car with physical controls, that is.

Finland has made it illegal to not just talk to a smartphone while driving, but also to operate one. But for some reason, touch screens on car controls are perfectly fine and legal.

I guess a touch screen magically converts from a dangerous, attention-hogging device to a safe piece of equipment by being physically attached to the car.

I think car manufacturers are slowly getting the message, because the hatred for touch screens in cars seems nearly universal.

@taylan @HebrideanHecate From your keyboard to the eyes of the Fates...

I'm personally annoyed that the legislation in Finland is clearly happy to go on a banning spree when it comes to consumer devices, but says absolutely nothing about car manufacturers embedding exactly the same technology in their cars.

It's such a glaring double-standard. One rule for the little people, another for businesses.
