  We are very near to that point now - at the point where interest on debt becomes the major portion of spending, it's much easier for people to say "fuck it" and run up debt until people stop buying it.

So i would say that until that happened, yes, they didn't feel that much pain. Kristallnacht happened about 15 years later after the hyperinflation. Hitler took power about 10 years later.
