@lydiaschoch My mother convinced my sisters and I that the Xmas tree must be taken down and all the ornaments stored away by New Year's Eve. If it wasn't it would bring bad luck. When we got out in the world we were shocked at all the friends houses that were just wishing for bad luck and were very worried. When finally confronted my mother continued the fiction, that unfortunately for my sisters and I led to much humiliation and teasing during our early adulthoods.

When I was a preschooler, I watched my mother take down our old wall calendar and put up a new one.
I asked her what she was doing, and she explained that the new year was about to begin.
Little Lydia didn’t approve of this grownup nonsense. She liked the year we already had and saw no reason to change it.
(Spoiler alert: it changed anyway.)
What’s one of your earliest memories about this time of year?
