This is LUDICROUS. Can we normalize buying physical media again, please?

Seasons of Jason (killyourfm@layer8.space)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 05:33:32 JST Seasons of Jason @drahardja You're absolutely right. I guess nothing that "hits home" hard enough.
Interestingly, I see that conversation happening fairly regularly in the eBook space, with lots of people advocating for Kobo and switching away from Kindle.

Dave Rahardja (drahardja@sfba.social)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 05:33:33 JST Dave Rahardja @killyourfm I think we as a society haven’t gone through enough events where a license server goes down permanently, taking down your ability to access any of “your” media, to have a conversation about what it means to physically own your own stuff.
When I “buy” a game on Steam or PS5 Store, I understand that I’m actually renting it, as well as the storage for my game saves, and I may lose access to both at any time. I don’t know how many people internalize that.

Seasons of Jason (killyourfm@layer8.space)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 05:44:26 JST Seasons of Jason @drahardja And how disturbingly hilarious that it was "1984."
More recently, people have been up in arms about book covers being changed whenever things like TV or movie adaptations happen.

Dave Rahardja (drahardja@sfba.social)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 05:44:27 JST Dave Rahardja @killyourfm I think the removal of “1984” from the Kindle store 15 years ago (gosh, has it been that long?) gained enough popular traction to spark a conversation about eBooks that has fortunately reached critical mass. I think it would take something like Steam going bankrupt or Microsoft discontinuing Xbox to start a similar conversation about games.

Seasons of Jason (killyourfm@layer8.space)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 05:46:43 JST Seasons of Jason @billyjoebowers *nods* This is the sobering truth. And it's a nightmare when you don't touch that console in a few months and wait forever for system software to be updated, and then for CONTROLLER FIRMWARE updates to get installed...
There is something positive to be said about emulation on devices like Steam Deck though. It makes me sincerely miss just powering up a game, hitting start, and playing.

billy joe bowers - hates nazis (billyjoebowers@mastodon.online)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 05:46:44 JST billy joe bowers - hates nazis This is everywhere. A few years ago I was going to buy a game console, the first one in years, and then I watched a friend of mine buy and set up a new one. I said never mind.
This was the end of an era. For years, starting in the early 2000s, we full grown adults, would sometimes get together and run out and buy a console and a game and play all night. You literally can't do that now because you'd spend 3 hours setting it up first.

Justin (justin@toot.io)'s status on Friday, 27-Dec-2024 07:49:50 JST Justin @killyourfm sadly I'm not sure having a physical copy works any differently any more. It's just an installer for Steam and the game data. Still need all the accounts.
