   What’s going on with YouTube recently with excessively long unskippable adverts? I’ve just started playing a 3.5 hour video and it’s first showing me a 19 minute unskippable advert for Microsoft Azure. I’ve muted that tab and set myself a timer to come back when it’s done.

     @SecurityWriter @kate Yep. On YouTube it's "just" a "quality of life" improvement, but everywhere else, it's protecting you from malware (malvertising drive-by exploits), browser crashes, rapid battery drain, etc.

     @dalias @kate Second this. Makes your life online much better, and I’ve not seen an ad on YouTube on my own devices for years.

     @kate In response to edit: ABP (AdBlock Plus) has been compromised for like a decade or more. It's owned by an advertising company and explicitly allows "acceptable" ads through.
