I'm too dumb to copy my mum's whatsapp chats form old to new mobile, because GrapheneOS won't allow the backup :cry_cirno:

@kaia You're using such privacy unfriendly, junk app like a WhatsApp on the privacy focused system? Seriously? What in the devil makes that an common sense? 🤔 🙄

@MartinaNeumayer my mum needs it to talk to friends her age in Germany, since everyone is on there. I can't change that. I just hope that Graphene can sandbox it a bit, so Whatsapp cannot look into her other files

@kaia is the old phone an iPhone?

If not you can export the backup as a file.
Which should be importable. Or are you doing that already?

@kaia ahh, not sure if thats gonna work. But definitely worth a try!

Hmm i never had problems with the backup file though.

The new device has grapheneOS? Have you Turned on the exploit protection compatibility mode for whatsapp?

And did you Grant it access to the filesystem - or at least the backup file?

@kaia You can sandboxit by yourself. There's an app which does it pretty well. I used to use it on the /eOS which is similar to the GOS. it was called AppCloner. Install desired app normally, run it only once just so without importing data. Then clone it and import backup into this cloned one. Should work fine. Use cloned app instead of the normal one, which can be removed now. AppCloner works for many different apps.

@kaia @MartinaNeumayer I'm guessing you made a local backup in Whatsapp, then copied "/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.whatsapp/Whatsapp"
And set up the new whatsapp?
It doesn't store it in the usual "Android/data" folder.

@kaia I backup that folder using Syncthing and restored it multiple times by now on non-GAPPS, non-microg ROMs. WA works surprisingly well without Google.

Glad to hear you got it solved. :akko_thumbup:
