    *deep breath*

I just checked out my GIPHY page and saw old social links under my profile.

I casually clicked on the Twitter link and saw that my former username was taken by someone who registered the account this month.

I had used Twitter 1.0 for 14 years, had a verified account sometimes quoted in the media. I stopped posting when EM took over, deactivated it and finally deleted the account on Nov 12th.

I didn't think they'd release old usernames so soon. X is officially THE WORST

@_elena that’s so frustrating. I know some people kept their account but inactive for that reason, but I decided to deactivate mine anyway.

@_elena I think Melon Tusk said something about deleting inactive accounts [citation needed], which would bring you to the same place, just a bit slower…

@_elena I was kinda lucky. Left Twitter 2 years ago, deleted my account last year, someone took it and was almost immediately suspended permanently for (IIRC) extreme far-right content. So no-one will be able to use my old account name anymore. So,thanks, I guess? :)

@_elena @juandesant in case it helps anyone: to avoid this conundrum I've first deleted my Twitter/X account, then waited for the "expiry" period, and finally then re-registered it as a fresh/empty account. (But of course it's risky for popular accounts that others might want to take over.)

@_elena We are in a middle of a nasty problem with our ex Twitter account. We tried to login, with correct credentials (from password .manager, so no chance to wrongly typing them). X says they need to verify that account, stating having sent a code to the associated email. Our server was never contacted by them (verified using the mail server logs).

@_elena I suspect is a tactic for deactivate disliked accounts. Contacting access-support@x.com resulted in some automated responses.

      @_elena @zacchiro https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/inactive-x-accounts
"What is X's inactive account policy?

We encourage people to actively log in and use X when they register an account. To keep your account active, be sure to log in at least every 30 days. Accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity."

So I guess that @linuxtrent account will be deleted permanently, one day or the other.

@_elena I guess that @zacchiro is right, better to maintain the account alive than risking to have it hijacked, or taken by others.
But what happened to @linuxtrent has no easy solution.

@_elena I have a personal account (I'm in the board of @linuxtrent ) and activated 2FA too, after seeing that. In my personal case the verification code arrived immediately by email.

@_elena I feel ya....I had the same experience with Instagram where my username was "taken" by someone. These social media services has such terrible username-recycling policies. I remember back in the day, Yahoo had the same policy where an email id will be recycled for registration after a cooling-off period.
If I remember correctly, Twitter will only let you deactivate your account for 30 days after which they are queued up for deletion anyway. So keeping it deactivated isn't ideal option.

@_elena Yeah, I am not surprised #ElonMusk did this, as he is trying to increase engagement on #X.

I initially put my account in private mode, then embraced the #Fediverse. I am now back to using X as it is the fastest way to contact my political leaders (Mayor, government officials, Senators, Congress representatives, state legislators, etcetera) who are mostly #Republicans (the #GOP dominated my area).
