I’ve been casually working on my Cantonese because I now live in San Francisco, where I’m very often needing to use Cantonese (old people LOVE to talk to me)
Learning any Chinese language on the internet is mostly sucky, mostly caters to ‘omg! Here’s how you do TONES!!’ to people who can’t do tones
But the YouTube channel ‘5 minutes Cantonese’ is quick and fast enlightening for me to drop in on random things. It’s working.

I have enough Cantonese to know when my auntie neighbors are gossiping about me (she always orders fried chicken! I once heard they say) but not enough to say it’s not always fried chicken, it’s also other things.
They better watch out (I’m going to be able to talk back at them soon)

We have an interesting relationship in which they talk at me in four languages (Vietnamese, Teochew, Cantonese and English) and I understand half of them and speak to them in only one (Teochew)
There’s a term for people who talk to each other in diff Chinese languages, when you understand but don’t speak. ‘Chicken and duck talking to each other’
In our case it’s more of like, chickens, ducks, geese and swans all at once
