I often consider re-investing into fedi, but then I remember how people fundamentally are on fedi, how my goals don't align with theirs, and then I just kind of move on.

Any node that doesn't federate with me isn't part of fediverse, very simple.
Obviously xmpp isn't part of fedi, even though it federates just fine, etc.
Bridges don't count because bridges are fake and gay. -

Zot and ZAP, in their current level of development, are superior to AP. Nomadic identity is huge, I think AP has some layers that would have something comparable if it was developed and deployed.
My approach to "federation" is more flexible, I count the owners of nodes as an indicator, accepting even tech like I2P or IPFS as "federation".
Technological competence and know-how is far more important than the "user", the "account". Coming to the Fediverse to talk about shit, rant and rave - anyone can do that. But underpinning the (IMHO) most important network is essential, or the "internet" going to become centralized around corporate fuckery.
I have high hopes for blockchains, but I am also terrified that it will shift the "ownership" of the "internet" to the owners of truly massive data centers.
Its a complex picture, but currently the owners of nodes are the owners of this network. -

@FourOh-LLC @NEETzsche I prefer to define "fediverse" as "AP".
I don't even count diaspora as fedi. -

ActivityPub and Mastodon are not the only players, there are other protocols and clients. Its really boring reading all these "end of the internet" scenarios, and learning that its not the end at all.
The Fediverse exist precisely because megalomaniacs don't give a flying fuck about anyone best interest but their own. -

@FourOh-LLC @NEETzsche When Gargron decides to make breaking changes he is not going to give a flying fuck about single-user instances. Not even mastodong instances. -

If you are already operating your own node you are doing all that is necessary to help the fedi thrive. We cannot help the way people behave so its not worth the effort, but I personally very much appreciate every owner-operator. We would not have this network, the Fediverse, if there were no small, single-user nodes.
A lot of people do not understand or do not appreciate just how important the small nodes are to the Fediverse.
