good time to be in the market for a 4 track. seems the ppl who snatched them up during lockdown specifically/exclusively 4 ambient tape loop shit are selling them off in droves and the prices are fairly reasonable. who couldve known that old complex electromechanical devices require nerdass upkeep

@pave_the_earth yeah I've been watching a tone show up on fb marketplace lately. I briefly toyed with the idea of getting some to use for tape djing but ended up deciding on two fiios instead fo reliability reasons and now I don't have the budget for any other players

my experience getting mine a year or 2 ago was there being few available generally and the ones that were too expensive for how broken they were. i got lucky with one for a reasonable price from japan. the steal i felt i got (120, pre-shipping) seems to now be on the lower end of average

porta twos can be had for 100-200, and porta ones for less (generally. u know how ebay sellers are). i love my porta one but i do wish it had the 2 extra channels the two has for mixing crimes

a lot of the parts/repair ones im seeing probably just need belts. dont go for a blue tascam, those fuckers are simply not worth it and probably wont be unless you have a lot of money and really really want to be just like alessandro for whatever reason

@pave_the_earth yeah, the CP13. I'm a huge evangelist for this thing, best player on the market hands down. it gives you the best shot at playing old shitty tapes (which is most of them at this point), and the amp is decent enough. build quality is rock solid. price is right

@pave_the_earth tho ofc I respect anyone willing to hunt and tinker to make the best out of old players, I am not willing to do that for a daily driver and I know most people are the same

@pave_the_earth I appreciate the advice. long-term durability is not something that has come up yet. Ultimately I would like to upgrade them to players with better mechanisms that also have speed control. Basically how I got here was trying to get a decent older player to refurbish but being burned by a tech who didn't know what he was doing, then giving up and picking an option I knew would be solid at least in the medium term. I hope to one day befriend someone who really knows their shit and who I can work with to get a pair of really good older machines.
I borrowed my friends Marantz PMD430 and used it for a little while and was super impressed in the overall quality and features, but it still was a little wobbly compared to my cp13. So definitely not something I would be excited to own without help. But the PMD420, or a Nak500, would be so awesome to have -

@Aleums i, too, am an evangelist. an old solid mech that needs a little love is the only option that gets even close to reliability for tape decks right now. when fiio builds a new mech, thats then my interest will be piqued

@Aleums i wish u the continual luck u will need as they age. its electronics are great but the mech is the same as every other new player and as a (i feel i can say now) semiexperienced tape deck repairer theyre just not very good. they're made with the most expensive of the 3 versions of the mech that exist but thats the high end of low end and will prove their unreliability eventually. and i look forward to buying them off ppl for cheap when they do to do my silly tape crimes with

@Aleums god i want a marantz so bad.wobbly play means new belts, which is a simple fix in theory if th belts r accessible w/out 2 much disassembly. looking up pmd430 it looks like a mid tier repair, gotta pull some shit out 2 get @ them but nothin 2 bad. nothing compared to the 1990 boombox i have with the new-style mech (from when the mech was a new design!) where i had to tear down literally everything to get at the main decks belts and permanently destroyed the radio tuner in the process lol

@pave_the_earth Most problems with decks come down to belts, don't they? My main deck is a Tascam 133 which kicks ass but the belts are going and I am dreading the replacement. On tapes that spin freely it works fine, but it seems that it gives up and stops more and more often with sub-par condition cassettes. I skimmed through a youtube video and it seems like belt replacement will require a total disassembly of the machine and I am really scared of breaking it
