    #DecRecs

If you can, get outdoors and into direct sunlight for at least 10 minutes, as soon as possible after waking up

I know there are some scientific reasons why this is probably good for you, but I can't remember them. Well, there is the vitamin d, but that's not dependent on what time of day you're in the sunlight. Is it something to with the effect of natural sunlight making some changes in brain chemistry??

(Theoretically I could ask a search engine but nearly all search engines seem to be poisoned by hallucinating AI these days)

I think of it as photosynthesising, even though I'm not a plant and don't have any chlorophyll (that I know of)

@scumsuck my doggos would always find some sun to lie in also. They are very nice to pat when they are sun-warmed

@lookitmychicken There are also people who swear on just being a little too cold for a few minutes every morning, which you can combine very well with your advice!

@ludovica oh yes! for a while, I did the thing where you turn off the hot water in the shower for the last bit of it, but it was too much for me and I couldn't keep it up. It wasn't quite as bad if I just turned the hot water *most* of the way off. I wonder if that would still have a beneficial effect?? I guess probably yes?

@lookitmychicken I do know that the reason why you want to use really cold water is to stimulate your blood flow, and that sadly doesn't really work with luke-warm water, BUT you can just go a little colder each time, like I did too, and at some point you might start to actually like it (I think it's really, really pleasant, especially in summer or after working out)

@lookitmychicken I used to really dislike cold showers BUT then I got into saunas, which are a huge thing in Austria, and usually you have these ice machines (like little water fountains but they're so cold the water turns to ice when it comes out) wherever you have saunas

And bc it's supposed to be healthy to use cold water after saunas, I started with cold showers, BUT the way you're supposed to do it traditionally: Right arm first, then right leg, then left arm, then left leg, then front, then back. I started doing that with showers after saunas, then with the ice machines, and now sometimes when I've been exercising and having a shower I will do it at the end too!

The reason why you do it that way is that you don't overtax your system, you just slowly stimulate blood flow from the area farthest away from the heart (right arm + leg) closer to the heart. Maybe try just using cold water on your limbs for a while?

@lookitmychicken I've probably improved enough (energy-wise and executive function-wise) to try this!! I should do it tomorrow morning.

I joke that I'm a plant. I NEED bright lights, or I get sad and droopy. Sunlight would probably be better than my ceiling light and computer :laughcry:
