    earlier this year I went for an MRI and two CT scans at a clinic in central Oslo. a doctor ordered them, just to be on the safe side.

    I walked in and for all three, in total, I paid approximately 25 USD. as would anyone else who walked in with a referral.

    no qualifications, no negotiation over "coverage," nothing.

      @hugo @mcc Not only that but also if you are young and relatively healthy your relationship with the insurer could be "weird and not great ...but whatever." But if you continue to live and age then it's only a matter of time before that relationship changes to something between "bureaucracy as the darkest art form" and "how is it legal to murder me/my loved one by paperwork?"

      @mcc

      I've often wondered about this and that makes a world of sense, yes. thank you.

      @hugo It is like that even *in* the US, living under it. You have to do active mental work to successfully conceptualize the entirety of what is being done to you. It is a thing that is too big to easily see, even when you are underneath it. You can be suffering and not clearly understand why. If you do realize why your brain wants to put it away and hide it, it is a truth that makes you feel unbearably helpless. You often even get angry at "your insurance company" without seeing the whole scope

      I think for me as for many others, the full horror of what life must be like living under the US "health insurance" system is something inaccessible, beyond imagination.

      @hugo @mcc This is probably by design so that the bulk of the truly angry are mostly old, sick and/or grieving people that don't have time or spoons to make navigating a hostile insurance company their main activity every day.
