Maybe there's also cheaper options to just get an ASN from a LIR and find the prefix somewhere else. I know someone on Fedi gave away prefix for free to people.
@icedquinn@jana@privateger i once discussed about getting a ripe member... it isnt cheap at all but it is payable, altho nowdays you wont get a ipv4 range for free anymore so i dont really care much about it
Tho, technically, you can only request them if you have a valid reason for actually needing them. Like, you use some 50-year-old gear that doesn't support 32bit ASNs.
Or in other words, anyone who is seriously offering them now is doing some weird shady stuff, since there barely is any valid reason anymore why you really need them, especially as a private hobby ASN. (Only applies within the RIPE region, ARIN is doing things a bit different)
What is more expensive is if you want to become a LIR yourself. That's 1k for the signup plus 1.8k/year as a membership fee at RIPE.
But still noting that is even near 20k :neocat_laugh_nervous:
@icedquinn@Jain@privateger Yeah, probably for the 16 bit ASN numbers. But if one doesn't have any reason to care, as I do, getting a 32 bit ASN through a LIR is nice and simple.
But since we are kinda out of IP space, the waiting list is at about 3 years to get just one /24 assigned.
Soo.. for many, it makes more sense to just get an ASN sponsored though another LIR and rent IP space. Makes financially a bit more sense, at least if you are planning for the foreseeable future.
Tho.. Technically, the whole IPv4 market is kinda the reason why nobody is returning unused space and the waiting list is that big of an issue in the first place..
