Please note that these folks seem a little confused about the the takedown of a single Matrix server. Matrix is an open source encrypted protocol, and there are multiple sets of Matrix clients (Element most popular) and open source server sw, many servers, and multiple matrix networks. This takedown seems unrelated to matrix.org

@dragosr Apparently it's a different, proprietary thing 🙄 The article should really clarify that https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_app

        Matrix app
The Matrix app was a chat app and communications network that was shut down by cooperation between Dutch and French police in December 2024. It was also known by the names Mactrix, Totalsec, X-Quantum and Q-Safe. History Dutch police discovered the network while investigating the murder of Peter de Vries in 2021. A mobile phone was found in the getaway car. The phone was found to be connected to the Matrix network. A joint task force involving Dutch and French police was formed, with 2.3 million messages in 33 languages intercepted. Police forces in Italy, Lithuania, Spain and Germany were also involved. Europol and Eurojust coordinated the investigation. Infrastructure The service operated on around 40 servers throughout Europe and had about 8000 users. Users paid between $1350 and $1700 in cryptocurrency for a Google Pixel handset and six months subscription to the service. @dragosr @cy Dunno, maybe. Europol's clarification to The Register was, "The Matrix protocol (matrix.org) is by no means connected to the Matrix secured communication service that was targeted in OTF Continental." https://www.theregister.com/2024/12/04/eurocop_crack_matrix/

@cy @annika It's still probably Matrix under the hood.

For those unfamiliar with it, there are loads of Matrix networks, private, public networks.

I was trying to match the screenshots with known Matrix clients to verify, problem is there are too many now. Think we can rule out text only ones but, with multiple mobile and desktop OS versions each that's a lot to check:

      Element
      Element X
      FluffyChat
      Nheko
      Cinny
      Fractal
      Quaternion
      gomuks
      Hydrogen
      NeoChat
      SchildiChat
      Ement.el
      Tammy
      iamb
      chatty
