Nearly the same here. A good friend living in Egypt had the same issues. Signal often not work, Telegram and WhatsApp works, but they give insights to chats if the government requested it.

Finally, we switch to DeltaChat based on encrypted email. Not ideal but better than the other options.

@decorum @_elena @evacide Briar is an amazing suggestion for local/nearby communication. Available on F-Droid too. Thank you!

We decide to use Signal for our family communication. Outside that there is a mix of different messengers like Threema, Telegram and Delta Chat. Not possible to get all persons to one platform. 😜

My journalistic friends are also using Briar sometimes because of it's Bluetooth direct communication chain. So no mobile data network needed.

maybe give GNU Jami a try?

no servers, fully P2P, no intermediaries, strong encryption, all makes it hard to block and somewhat safe to use. runs on the most popular operating systems, and it's entirely auditable free software

in a perfect world, it would be possible to make it work on top of Tor as well, but I don't think that is possible ATM. I believe Tox (another P2P messaging network) can work behind Tor, but I don't know a lot about it.
