    👴🏿Minor grumpy old man rant:
    Look. I get it that companies want to make more and more cash and grow and grow and grow. I'm not even debating that. I'm just saying, planned obsolescence is one way. Not the only way. Just one way. You can also grow by making a product so reliable, so affordable, so durable, so usable, that people say, "just get that one!"♥️

    The sun will start dying and expand to swallow earth before this KitchenAid stops working.

      @mekkaokereke @Rycaut @dusk @clive @hazelnot @teadrinker I'd gladly pay more for a product that lasted. I'm nursing along all my appliances, all ~10y old and now iffy.

      When I was a kid my mum used to shred washing machines. Lot of laundry. Repair guy from the manufacturer told her "you're using it too much". Eventually bought an expensive model which looked a bit quaint but lasted until well after I moved out.

      Not sure that same resilient thinking goes into any products now, expensive or not.

      Same with this beauty from the early 70s. Motor is so powerful it’s like having a tractor engine in the kitchen. It will outlive me.

      @mekkaokereke @tehstu @Rycaut @dusk @clive @hazelnot @teadrinker my kitchenaid actually broke when trying to knead a bread lump that was a little too big orz

      anyway the internals are designed so that among all the steel there's a single nylon sprocket; this is the piece that breaks before any of the steel comes close to failing and you can replace it for like six bucks and 20 minutes with a screwdriver

      thanks kitchenaid engineers

      Thankfully, this article title and article body follow the usual pattern! 🙂🙃

      Article title:
      Company goes bankrupt for [weird reason]!

      Article Body:
      Something something *Private Equity* something something *expectations* something something *bankruptcy* something something *shareholder value*

        Why Did Instant Pot—Revered, Cherished, Iconic—Just File For Bankruptcy?
        from Sam Stone
        It might seem baffling that such a popular kitchen tool is failing. But the fact it's such a high-quality appliance is a part of the problem, actually.

      @mekkaokereke @tehstu @Rycaut @dusk @clive @hazelnot @teadrinker but what if you could <checks plan> make it wifi-controlled for a very reasonable monthly subscription?
