   I have mixed feelings about American Thanksgiving, but I feel like there's something important in eating native North American foods like turkey, cranberry, pecan pie, pumpkin, corn and wild rice on this day.

     @limneticvillains I don't want to be pedantic but potatoes and sweet potatoes are from South America.

     We have some pretty interesting tubers native to my area of North America, like Apios americana and Jerusalem artichoke (neither an artichoke nor from Jerusalem).

     @evan Didn't they spread fairly quickly? Weren't they on the menu by the time the colonies were spreading through North America?

     @limneticvillains yes, both were a big part of the Columbian Exchange. They weren't afaik eaten in North America before colonization.

     But, hey, let's give them a hand anyway. They are native to this hemisphere.

     @evan As someone not from the US I don't know why anyone marks the day, seems like a celebration of murdering the indigenous people masked as a peace giving celebration.

     @limneticvillains it's *not* a celebration of genocide. It is a celebration of a false model of encounter between two continents with equality and respect. One reason Native North American people don't like the holiday is that it perpetuates a myth of peaceful cohabitation without confronting the much uglier reality.
