   I'm quite sure that starter packs are one key reason BlueSky is growing so fast. It's a genuine innovation in this space and Mastodon/fed need it yesterday.

     @fisherstudio @dangillmor Not remotely similar. Hashtags are an utterly stupid idea because they're the opposite of curated: anyone can spam them. You can sometimes find interesting posts or ppl via them but without domain expertise yourself you have no idea whether they're trustworthy.

     @dangillmor On a service you cannot search (in many cases) as a feature, I'm not sure how some of them would work. You can follow hashtags here. Is that not about the same thing?

     @dalias @dangillmor Thanks for educating me. I follow a few hashtags here and have encountered neither spam nor abuse of any kind. Try # BloomScrolling, which is popular. I believe I understand how starter packs work, having encountered them pretty much everywhere else, but I have not experienced how that other site is doing it.

     @fisherstudio @dangillmor You'll necessarily encounter more and more spam or just posts of dubious truthfulness on hashtags as fedi grows. The old school fedi folks' dwelling on hashtags as a viable mechanism is intimately linked with their hostility to fedi's growth & serving population at large rather than tiny community.
