Happy #ElectionDay2022 if you're in the US!

Yesterday's Gospel in the #Episcopal Lectionary was Luke 14:12-24. A few of my study Bible notes suggested this parable was about Jews and Gentiles - e.g., the Jews were the ones initially invited, and Jesus says "not one of those individuals who were invited will taste my banquet" (NET).

@fu @Aslanmane really? I don't know much about Catholic doctrine - why is that?

That interpretation feels antisemitic and obviously wrong. After all, Jesus (Jewish) and his disciples (Jewish) were all having dinner with Pharisees (Jewish) when he told this parable. What a profound waste of time if none of them would experience the Kingdom!

And above the logical argument - Christians need to be constantly vigilant that we don't promote antisemitism even unintentionally. Antisemitism is rampant here in the US.

What are some other possible interpretations?

@lemurbat I don't read it about Jews & Gentiles explicitly. Rather those who have the privledge of growing up with the knowledge of God and refusing to know him.
So in the context of the time, that would be the Jews because that's where he was. Now it would be people who grow up within the church and choose to leave it.

Bible Gateway passage: Luke 14:12-24 - The Voice
Jesus still wasn’t finished. Now He turned to the host who had invited Him to this gathering. Jesus: When you host a dinner or banquet, don’t invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors. If you do, they might invite you to a party of their own, and you’ll be repaid for your kindness. Instead, invite the poor, the amputees, the cripples, the blind. Then you’ll be blessed because they can never repay you. Your reward will come from God at the resurrection of the just and good. Guest: Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God! Jesus: A man once hosted a huge banquet and invited many guests.
